The Valley Of Fear - complete synopsis

Complete synopsis of The valley of fear

The Valley of Fear is a mystery novel by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and was the last of the four Sherlock Holmes novels written by the author. It was first published in serial form in the Strand Magazine from September 1914 to May 1915.
At the outset of the novel Sherlock Holmes receives a message from Porlock, an agent to Professor Moriarty. Porlock occasionally sends Holmes insider information.
Moriarty is blameless in the eyes of the law but Holmes knows him to be "the controlling brain of the underworld." Together Holmes and Watson decipher Porlock's message as indicating that a man named Douglas residing at Birlstone is in danger.
Inspector MacDonald of Scotland Yard calls upon Holmes to ask for his help and informs him that Mr Douglas of Birlstone Manor House has been murdered that morning. Holmes tells MacDonald that since he received an alert from Porlock it is probable that Professor Moriarty's influence exists in the matter.
MacDonald reminds Holmes that the professor is an educated and well respected man. Holmes informs MacDonald that although the Professor's salary is seven hundred pounds a year he owns a painting worth over forty thousand pounds and the Inspector agrees that this is suspicious.
Holmes, Watson and MacDonald travel to Birlstone village in Sussex. John Douglas was murdered at around midnight and had been shot in the head. The house is an old manor with a moat and drawbridge. A man name Cecil Barker was staying at the house on the night the murder took place and was a regular guest of Mr and Mrs Douglas.
A sawn off shotgun was found at the scene. It appeared to have been fired at close range which caused the head to have been completely blown to pieces.
Cecil Barker claims that he was upstairs in his room when he heard the shot and rushed downstairs. The drawbridge was up at this time and Cecil claims that he lowered it in order to admit help. There is a mark of blood upon the window sill where someone seems to have entered. Cecil says that he thinks the intruder got away by wading through the moat but has no explanation for how the assailant entered the house in the first place unless he entered before that time and waited in the house.
A card lays beside the body with the initials V.V scrawled in ink upon it. A small branded mark is seen on the man's arm but it has not been made recently. Douglas' wedding ring appears to have been taken from his hand which seems indicative since no others rings were taken.
The police speculatethat the murderer must have escaped across the moat but if this was so then the question of how he has so far eluded the police when all his clothes were wet as he walked through the town is a mystery.
Holmes notices that Mr Douglas seems to have had only one dumbbell to hand in the study which strikes him as odd.
From interviews with the people in the house more details about the events are established. Cecil Barker heard the shot, rushed down from his bedroom and entered the study and upon seeing Douglas murdered he rang violently on the bell. The servants and Mrs Douglas all rushed to the scene. Mr Barker persuaded Mrs Douglas to return to her room which she did. Holmes mentions to Watson that he thinks it was strange for Mrs Douglas to have shown so little outward emotion and not to have rushed to her husband's body.
Cecil Barker says that he believes a secret society of men pursued Douglas and that this fear for his life is what prompted him to live in such a quiet area of England.
Mr Douglas married his wife when he came to England five years previously. He had been married before and this first wife died of Typhoid. Douglas had met and worked with Cecil Barker in America for a time and then and suddenly left for Europe.
Both Cecil Barker and Mrs Douglas were aware that some danger overhung Douglas and that this danger was connected with some episode of his life in America. Mrs Douglas says that she had heard her husband mention "The Valley of Fear".
By studying the soles of Cecil Barker's slippers Holmes ascertains that Barker used the sole of his own shoe to make the mark on the window sill so as to give the appearance that someone exited that way.
Back at their lodgings in the village Holmes tells Watson that Cecil Barker and Mrs Douglas are certainly lying but that why they are lying is not yet clear.
When a shotgun is fired at close range the sound is muffled. The housekeeper heard what she described as a door slamming half an hour before the alarm was raised. Holmes believes that what the housekeeper actually heard was the shot fired when the murder really took place.
White Mason, the Sussex detective, and MacDonald report that they have traced a bicycle found on the grounds of the house to an American staying at a guest house. It seems likely that he was the assailant since the gun used in the murder was of an American make but there is no sign of the man.
Holmes tells MacDonald to write to Cecil Barker and inform him that the police ntend to search the moat the next day. That night Holmes, Watson, MacDonald and White lay in wait outside Birlstone Manor and see Cecil Barker fish something out of the moat. Cecil refuses to explain the situation but at that moment Mr Douglas appears, alive and well.
Douglas hands Dr Watson a written account called The Valley of Fear which he says explains the early part of his story and why he ended up being hunted in such a desperate way.
Douglas explains the recent events. He had spotted an enemy of his, Ted Baldwin, in the area and expected an attack. The next day he was attacked is his study, the assailant attempted to shoot him but Douglas grabbed the gun first and in the struggle between the two men Baldwin received a shot to his face. With Cecil's help Douglas dressed the man in his own clothes and disposed of Baldwin's suit in the moat. He put his rings on the man's fingers except his wedding ring which he could not get off.
The card was the mark that Baldwin had brought with him and intended to leave on Douglas' body, V.V stood for Vermissa Valley. Douglas explains that the branding mark was that of a society to which both he and Baldwin belonged. Since they both bore the mark on their arms this would make it likely that the bodies could not be told apart since Baldwin's head was destroyed utterly by the shot.
Since the time of the murder Cecil and Mrs Douglas had covered for Douglas who was hiding in the house.
The report Douglas gives to Watson explains how he came to be hunted so viciously. Douglas' real name is Birdy Edwards and he was at one time a detective with the Chicago detective agency Pinkerton's.
Edwards had infiltrated a dangerous gang in Vermissa Valley, which had become known as the Valley of Fear, and brought them to justice.
Edwards' life had never been safe since some of the criminals who had escaped the death penalty were released from jail. Edwards had moved around from place to place. His first wife Ettie, whom he had met in the valley, passed away. He then met Cecil and the two made a fortune in business together. Hounded once again Douglas disappeared and made for England where he met and married his second wife.
Holmes urges Douglas to leave England and warns that a new threat, greater than all those of his past, now hangs over him. Douglas takes this advice but is mysteriously lost overboard on the vessel bearing him and his wife to Africa.
Holmes is convinced that Professor Moriarty was consulted by the men who hunted Douglas and that it was this criminal mastermind whose direction ended Douglas' life. Holmes intends to bring Moriarty down but warns Watson and MacDonald that it will take some time to achieve.

The four men rush in and surprise Cecil, the bundle he has fished from the moat turns out to be the clothes of the missing American connected with the bicycle. It was weighted down with the missing dumbbell.

All the world's a stage
Stages in the poem
  • Infancy
  •  School Boy
  • Lover
  •  Soldier
  • Adult Hood(Justice)
  • Middle Age( Pantaloon)
  • Old Age
‘The Seven Ages of Man’ is taken from William Shakespeare’s famous play, ‘As You Like It’ (Act-II, Scene-VII), describes the seven phases in a man’s life-from childhood to old age. The world is but a global stage and all men and women presented here are mere puppets in the hands of destiny. Just like the infrastructures of a stage, the world has its own entrances and exits. Every man in his full lifetime has many parts to play. His total number of acts in his lifetime is the seven ages.
The first and foremost act of every human being is the stage of infancy, where he makes his presence felt by crying at the top of his voice and many a times vomiting any food or drink that is repulsive, at the nursing arms of his mother. This period normally last till four years of age. The second stage is the ‘whining’ schoolboy where he learns to utter a plaintive, high-pitched, protracted sound, as in pain, fear, supplication, or complaint. His shiny morning face and his satchel; a small bag, sometimes with a shoulder strap; he creeps like a snail and not willing to go to school.
The third stage is his early youth, the peak of love and high romance. He sighs like a burning furnace and sings the sad ballads of romance; full of woe; affected with, characterized by, or indicating woe: woeful melodies; to impress his lover’s heart. The impression of her reply can be seen in her eyebrows. The fourth stage is that of a soldier where life if full of obligations, commitments, compliance, oaths and vows.  His beard is like a leopard or panther. He endlessly fights for his honor, a full presence of mind which is sudden and quick in quarrel and a heart to maintain a dignified reputation.
The fifth stage is the adult-hood where a man tries to live a fair and justified life. His belly becomes bigger than normal. He is conscious about his diet and consumes a good intake of ‘capon’; a cockerel castrated to improve the flesh for use as food. His eyes are severe with seriousness and his beard is leveled to a formal cut. He is to take a lot of correct decisions to keep up with the ever changing times. So this stage is the most powerful stage in life.

The sixth stage is the middle-age. Here is where he prepares himself for the next level in life i.e. old age. He learns to relax from the hustles of life. His strength begins to weaken and spends more time within the roof of his house. He looks like a buffoon and an old fool in his rugged old slippers. He hangs his spectacles on his nose for reading and all his youthful hose; a flexible tube for conveying a liquid, as water, to a desired point; saved for the world too wide. His shank begins to shrink with time; the part of the lower limb in humans between the knee and the ankle; leg. Even his voice begins to descend to a lower tone. In his free time, he smokes his pipe and whistles his matured melodies.
The last stage is the old-age where he enters his second childhood. It is also the beginning of the end of his eventful history. It is also the stage of oblivion; the state of being completely forgotten or unknown; the state of forgetting or of being oblivious; official disregard or overlooking of offenses; He is without everything; without teeth, eyes and taste.

THE CLOUDS

Poem : The Cloud

Shelly imagines that the cloud is a person, the ‘I’ who speaks and describes itself. The first stanza tells us about its activity; the last stanza deals with the growth and disappearance of clouds, while here ‘I’ really stands for moisture-water in all its forms, on earth and in the sky.
The cloud says that it brings fresh showers of rain for thirsty plants and flowers from the oceans, seas, lakes, rivers and streams; water evaporates from these to form clouds, and then fall as rain. When the sun gets too hot in the afternoon and the plants are at the mercy of the scorching heat of the sun, the rain bears a light shade for the leaves and relieves them of the uneasiness. When the wings of the clouds are shaken, it wakes up the idle dews on the leaves of plants and enlightened their flowering buds. The flora are cooed to rest on the motherly earth; as the earth is the mother of all living things; as she moves around the sun. Shelly is talking of the earth as a planet. The ‘flail’ is an instrument used for beating wheat, to separate the grain from the husk. The hail strikes the earth hard, like a flail hitting the wheat. Hail consists of little balls of ice, so when it lies on the ground, it makes the green plains look white. Then the hail melts into water again, evaporates into the air to form clouds of rain, and ultimately pours down joyfully as stormy rain along with thunder and lighting.

The Dark Ground
Notes & Analysis

Event Analysis | Quote Analysis | Character Analysis | Questions to think of

Summary
Analysis
Pg. 1 – 32

Two scenarios are described, taking place in the same ‘dark ground’ where children seem to have been lost.

Cam, Zak, etc: large group of people staying near a ravine.

Robert:  Was in a plane with family, went to bathroom to brush teeth, weird stuff going on with reflection, and randomly wakes up in a kind of forest, naked and alone. After making arrangements (shelter, food, clothes), realizes that the plane might have crashed. Finds fur blanket sewn by human in his burrow.

¬        It does seem likely that the plane crashed and brought Robert to this place.
¬        The fur blanket was probably sewn by humans who stayed in the place for a longer time than Robert did (not from the same plane crash).

-          Zak: disobeying rebel
-          Cam: like a leader; dominant; doesn’t like to look weak
-          Robert: Smart and adjusting; independent; clever to pick out things for his usage and survival; optimistic

·          “‘Remember…’ he said again. The sound was relentless. Unbearable.” (6)
There were some painful memories in the past that were not to be remembered. Something terrifying had once happened, that shouldn’t have been recalled.
·         “The rush of fury took him by surprise, but it was her fault for talking nonsense. It’s just like a photo. What did she mean? A photograph was just an image – flat colors on a piece of shiny paper. There was nothing behind the surface. What they could see through the window was completely different. It was real” (9)
Robert had a unique point of view toward the world. He had a different understanding of the real nature around.

Why is/are the helper/s trying to hide their identity, while helping him secretly?
Pg. 32 – 55

Cam & the others live in a cavern. Cam notices that fur is missing. Lorn had secretly kept it in Robert’s burrow. Cam and all the others were mad at her.
Robert finds a fruit in his burrow. Seems like Lorn’s determined to help him despite her group’s fury and has empathy towards him. Robert almost catches her the next time she comes with a bundle. She runs away leaving it behind when she sees him. She comes again that night to get her bundle back. He catches her and bargains with her to show him her settlement for the bundle.
She takes him to the ravine, where she nervously asks him to be quiet and give her the bundle. She then crosses the ravine through the spanning tree trunk and Robert, in quest of finding the others, follows her. He is slower, and as he crosses the trunk halfway through, a giant bird suddenly attacks him.

¬     The others are probably mad at her because they don’t want to involve another human into their group. Perhaps they don’t have enough supplies for a new person, or there was something special about them that they didn’t want others finding out.
¬     Robert is homesick, would do anything to find other humans around him and to get back home.

-          Cam: attentive, in-charge, knowledgeable
-          Zak: Imaginative, story-teller, respected
-          Bando: Inattentive, foolish
-          Lorn: Caring, thoughtful, nimble, fast

Pg. 56 – 67

A gigantic bird attacked him as he lay on the bark. Robert tried to throw himself off, into the ravine, but the bird clawed at his legs, injuring him badly, lifted him into the air and dropped him at a different point. It was heading straight toward his prey, to attack him, when Robert grabbed a stick and started jabbing the bird’s eye with it. The bird screeched and stabbed him back with its beak. Just as the bird’s attention was diverted from Robert, he rolled away dropping deeper and deeper into a cavern. Once he was in the cavern, he headed for the openings far above him. As he got out of the opening, he realized that he was inside a gigantic tree. As he looked across the rift between the leaves, he realized that he was in the park across the street from his home. And he was small. Much too small for the tree to look regular sized.

·         “A glaring, gelatinous globe gleamed black and yellow…” (56)
Alliteration of ‘gl’ sound.
·         “… and – looking straight down now – the normal, ordinary, middle sized oak tree where he was sitting” (62)
He realizes that the oak tree is not extraordinarily gigantic, but in fact he was miniscule.
·         “Water was easy. The strange heavy dew of the first night appeared again on the second evening. And the third.”  (36)
The due was probably so heavy and regular as it was really water from the sprinklers.

How did he end up suddenly from a regular plane in the air to a tiny Robert in the park in front of his own house?

Pg. 68 – 107

Back in the cavern, Nate and Perdrew return with the news that “the boy” had stopped midway through the bridge and had been caught by the bird. Cam blames Lorn and indicates that the reason they didn’t take him into the group was because they couldn’t cope with any more “losers” (fools, like Bando).
They seem to be familiar to the situation of being captured by a bird.

Robert decided to climb back down the tree to go and find Lorn and her group. Realizes that the ravine was a ditch. He finally reached there and when he called for them, three from the group took him to their cavern.  They took care of him, fed him and treated him until he became fit enough to do the routine work that everyone did.
One day, the group (Zak, mostly) decides to perform a kind of ritual. He plays the drum and they do some things with leaves like silkskin.
They then ask Robert to introduce himself, and as he does so, he gets flashbacks of memories from home. While the others want him to change to become one of them and forget about everything, he simply opposes them saying that he’s going to go back to his home. Zak then tells a story.

-          Cam: a little egotistical; changes to caring and generous
-          Robert: Sensible, brave, learner
-          Nate: Helping, caring (helped Robert: fire)

¬     Though everyone was nice to Bando, they found it hard to cope with him and didn’t want more fools like him in the group. However, they were generous enough to keep Bando and be so pleasant to him.

·         “Cam felt her breath stop as the memory came at her. The moment of knowing. It was the memory she’d been holding back – that they’d all been holding back – ever since they’d seen the boy fall out of the sky.” (70)
Robert after all did fall out of the sky; perhaps from the plane?

Why were they holding back the memories because of Robert?
Why was Zak so well-respected and considered so crucial in the group?
Why did the others not want to go back to their homes?

Pg. 108 – 140

Cam and Zak secretly have a discussion about how Robert is “the one”. While Cam wants to deny it, Zak convinces her that it’s time for her to “go with him”. Nate secretly wants to go back home too.
The entire group then has a joint discussion where Robert helps them figure out the map of the area they’re in. They seem to have approved of him going on the journey back. But Zak wanted Robert to have a taste of what it was like outside. Robert struggled with his wounds as they travelled merely to the patch of short grass from where he could see his home. Zak disappeared for a second into the darkness to give Robert the lesson of fear. Perdrew and Lorn were still against Robert’s decision.

Cam announced that Zak and she were going to join Robert and Nate to go on the journey. The entire group helped them to prepare and they left as soon as it stopped raining.

-          Robert: Risk-taker, bold, harsh
-          Lorn: affectionate, cowardly,

¬     Mentioning that Robert is “the one”, it seems that the group had earlier never had members brave or knowledgeable enough to travel back home, though they all secretly wanted to go back.
¬     Since Zak knows so much about the world outside, it seems like he has been on ventures out trying to make his way back home.

·         “‘Why do you have to be so stupid?’ Robert snapped. ‘Why don’t you stop acting like a baby and pull yourself together?’ He didn’t care how loudly Bando bellowed back. He needed an excuse to yell at someone.” (111)
Robert was being a little harsh on Bando, but he was frustrated and wanted to get back home. He could have possibly done it to get attention as well, so that someone would talk to him about his intentions to leave.
·         “We don’t remember. We look forward.” (112)
Mostly the whole group was pessimistic. They believed that rather than risking their lives to go ahead and get back their better life styles, they should forget about everything and start a new one.
Pg. 140 – 190

The four were faced by a bird on the second day of their journey. They passed it skillfully by staying still. Another day passed as they made it to a block of trees.
Meanwhile, back at the cavern, it was weird and lonely without Cam and Zak. Everyone was worried about the travelers and they made a model of their journey with 4 marbles representing them.
At a point in their journey, Robert gets discouraged realizing that it would be almost pointless to get back home, considering his size. The others encourage him and act as supporters and good teammates.
They find a snail and collaborate to kill it. Another monstrous creature was about to attack them when Robert fought it and the others helped to scare it off. They all celebrated in triumph.

The next day, Nate took great care of Robert as he became sick. In the morning, as the group was making its way across a river, with Nate a little behind, Nate was attacked and suddenly killed by the creature they had scared off the other night. The rest of them hesitated but ran for their own lives on Cam’s orders.

-          Cam: knowledgeable, brave
-          Nate: caring, sweet

¬     Working together and encouraging each other, the four were a good team. They had now even begun to treat Robert truly like one of them.

·         “When she came to the last – the black one – something made her hesitate. She weighed it in her hand reluctantly, looking down at the dent.” (189)
“Immediately Bando was horrified at what he’d done. He raced off down the cavern to get the stone back. But they couldn’t find it anywhere.” (190)
Symbolizes the loss of Nate from the group.
Pg. 190 – 230
As they kept travelling, they finally reached the street which they had to pass to get to the houses. It looked like a huge lava ground to cross. They waited for the right time and crossed the street late at night, turn by turn. They adapted a smart strategy in which they counted so as to keep track of how often cars come by. When Cam was almost spotted by the night bird, Robert distracted it. When they got to the other side, they slept amongst marigold flowers in the front yard of Robert’s house. Robert decided to climb the tree in front of the house and get to the window. When he got there, he tried to get his mother’s attention, while she in turn, thinking he’s a bug, flicks him off.

Meanwhile, back in the cavern, Bando and the others were concerned about Lorn’s health, as she was too small to survive in the winter. Lorn likes Robert and misses him.

Robert feels hopeless after what happened. However, his teammates give him support. Cam tells Robert that he must be the new leader in the cavern, as she won’t last too long. Before starting on the journey back to the cavern, Robert wants to give one last attempt at seeking attention from his family members. He and his mates work hard to create a picture using the marigold flowers and a special flower that Robert remembered of Emma’s likes.
He then sees the giant Robert coming out of the house. As he notices him, he bends down to touch the tiny Robert. As their hands touch, the small Robert sees everything else shrinking and comes back to his normal size, while the other Robert disappears. Emma is astonished but tries to ignore everything and behave like it never happened. When Robert tells her everything, she decides to assist him to help the others in the cavern. They take supplies down.

-          Cam: sensible
-          Robert: reliable, loyal, firm
-          Emma: naïve, generous, sweet

¬     The relationship between Robert and Lorn seems sweet. They both like each other. Robert wants to help Lorn and pay back for all that she had done for him.

¬     Though he has a breakdown, he sensibly decides not to give up and do his best when he has the opportunity. Cam is proven to be wrong –the journey was not pointless after all.

Does Lorn survive?
What is to happen of the relationship between Robert and Lorn?
Do Cam and Zak make it back home to the cavern?
Can Robert help the others to get to their own homes?

Chapter 1

In the first chapter Zak was making Cam remember her Past and this was annoying Cam. She could not catch him because he was up on a tree branch. Cam became outrageous and all of them started to pull the tree and it fell down.

Chapter 2
Robert woke up on a plane and he was dreaming about something horrible. He just could not explain it to Emma because she would think that he is pathetic. Then Robert went to the toilet for brushing his teeth he just didn’t feel like himself and then everything exploded.

Chapter 3
In chapter 3 Robert woke up in the middle of nowhere. He wanted to find food and shelter so he started walking. He found some fleece so he made a cloth for himself. Then he settled in a bamboo clump. He immediately slept after it. After waking he finished his thirst by drinking water on the leaves and ate the seeds he found in his fleece.

Chapter 4
In this chapter Robert woke up so he was wet. He hung up his fleece so it could dry. Then he tried to remember what happened he thought that it might be alone crash. He decided that he would make a burrow and he was successful. He found a fur blanket in his burrow when he came back finding food and water.

Chapter 5
As Cam was the leader of the cavern so she noticed that the bat fur was missing from there. Because it was her job to perceive things. Dozens of things were to be observed just to keep life going on in cavern. Except Cam, her fellows also joined her in working hard. As a leader, Cam knows every inch of the cavern that what is happening inside, and that’s why she was able to spot that missing fur. Lorn was also a member of the same group, she was rearranging the other furs. Cam was noticing everything that Lorn was doing but she didn’t say anything to her. All her fellows were gathered in evening where Zak needs to tell his story. Cam stopped him and she went towards the corner where the furs were laid. She took one pair and came back to the circle and ask other fellows to do the same. Lorn at last stood up and picked up the last fur from there. Cam already knew that where the furs had gone. Perdew and Ab were angry. They had that bat tree for collecting the last two furs. Some of the others like Shang and Tina, the broken rule was the most important thing that can threaten their security. Bando was the only one who was unaware of what was going on. He was playing at the corner with the furs. Cam’s eyes were roaming round all the directions until she reached Zak who was sitting beside her. He met her eyes but no reaction took place over there. Now she had to make the decision on her own. She stood up leaving her furs over there; she walked slowly across the circle towards Lorn. After she stood, everyone started following Cam in silence. At a certain place away from the brazier, they all made a new circle. Zak hold Bando's arm and they both sat in new circle. Zak at last looked for everyone's attention and starts his story. Only Cam was looking at the red glare of the brazier. Lorn stood up for a moment for Zak to start his story. As he started, she knelt down and began to move the furs into a pile, folding them neatly with her quick adroit hands.

Chapter  8
Robert woke up and saw a figure coming close to him. The figure was of Lorn who came to take her leather bag pack. Robert wanted Lorn to lead him to the others but Lorn ran. He tried to follow her but she was too fast and she led him to the ravine. Robert fell, and couldn't walk properly. He found that Lorn had disappeared. He tried to cross the ravine and suddenly saw a black figure moving towards him and he knew he couldn't run away.

chapter  9
Robert was caught by an ogre bird which took him to its Den. Robert tried to run away from the bird and in the struggle he got badly hurt on his arm. The ogre bird was a carnivore. He had the feeling that his wound would get infected. He climbed on an oak tree and the bird didn't come after him. Robert started having illusions of his own house and started seeing all the things around his house. He was injured badly.

Chapter  10
"Kiuu", a bird sound, was heard by the people in the cavern. They immediately got to know that the bird had caught something or someone. Nate and Perdew the hunters, informed the cavern people that Robert was the one hunted by the bird. Zak and Cam argued about if Robert was dead or not?. Cam thought Robert being caught was Lorn’s fault while Lorn thought it was every one’s fault and not just hers. Cam finally agreed that if Robert was alive he could be in their group. She was still angry because she knew that if Robert was caught from here the bird would come again to hunt, and would kill them all.
CHAPTER 11
In chapter 11, Robert was feeling homesick as for a very long time he sat on the oak tree, not able to do anything, neither think nor move except staring at the impossible world around him. He was having illusions of food too. He actually had two realities clashing each other, the last moment in the aero plane and the very first moment in the dark wood. He wanted to find out the group of people. He was out of the den and climbing off the branch by the fear of ogre bird, by now he had reached to the ravine. Three people came to rescue him and they took him to the cavern. Cam came too as she was the leader and Lorn came to get the bat pack from Robert but Robert could not identify her. The other people were much smaller than Robert. In the last, Robert was given something to eat and then finally he slept.

Chapter 12

They burnt his leg. Robert woke up surrounded by dozens of people. He tries to break free but they hold him down. They were burning his wounds to stop any infections from spreading through his body. He faints(loss of consciousness) due to the unbearable pain. When he gains partial consciousness, he was able to recognize the people around him. Cam assigns him a job to keep the fire alight by the logs(part where branches grow) which were actually twigs. After a few days of doing so, Cam came to him that he had to help Lorn in plaiting(make plaits). After six weeks, Zak brought out a drum and started drumming and humming (Sing with closed lips) Bando stands up picks up a leaf and presented it to Zak. Zak touched it with his mouth and ran his tongue along it. Cam signaled Robert to go next. He obviously did not want to go so Bando lifted him to his feet and dropped him in front of Zak. Zak question to Robert was that;
"Who are you?"

Chapter  13

As soon as Robert woke up he saw faces around him. Zak started asking him questions about him and his family. He was worried, trying to find answers of where his family had gone and what had happened?  He remembered everything and he was scared of the ogre bird. He wanted to go back home but everyone thought it was a bad idea. Zak had spiritual powers and Robert knew he would be named as well.

Chapter  14
Everyone in the cavern were sleeping accept Tina and Perdew who were working and came, she went around the cavern all alone because she knew Zak would come. She suddenly heard someone call her real name. It was Zak who was trying to convince her to go with Robert but she knew that winter was near and it would be hard to to travel. Cam went back to the cavern and started thinking about what had just happened.

Chapter  15
Robert woke up with his own voice echoing in his mind he was determined on his decision. He had to work with Bando and that's what he did. Robert tried to convince Nate to go with him; he thought Nate was his friend. Others were convincing Robert not to go and told the dangers, ravine, long wood, grassland, wires, animals and then finally the road but Robert's decision didn't change. Zak wanted Robert to forget his past and wanted to name him through his spiritual powers but Robert refused he wanted to be Robert no one else.

Chapter  16

Robert woke up and announced that he still wants to go to his home and if anyone wants to come along then he is welcome and he would start his journey after some preparations. Lorn tried to convince Robert to change his mind but Robert didn't listen to her. Robert tried to convince Lorn to come with him. Perdew and Lorn tried to persuade Robert to stay in the cavern rather than starting his journey to home as it would be dangerous for him. Nate told Robert that he wants to come with him and his real name is Steven. Nate and Robert started to collect food for their journey. Cam observed them secretly. She knew that the food wasn't enough for them but she                                                                                            didn't say a single word. Rain started. Whenever it stopped raining they all went out to collect water. Cavern got chaotic. Zak , Cam would also be going with Nate and Robert. Cavern people are surprised on this decision.

Chapter  17

All the members of cavern did preparations for the journey. The journey was difficult. The temperature was dropping. They couldn't make fire. They also had to find different shelter every night. Each one of them was holding a long stick with a piece of tin at top. They could use it for protection and attacking. Perdew advised Robert to hit it in the eyes of a someone rather than hitting it on skin because it won’t harm skin or bone. They started their journey. They followed Cam. Cam worked out the way by seeing, smelling and listening. They ate and rested then continued their journey. As they began to approach end of long woods a bird came. They lied as still as a stone on the ground. The bird dragged a serpent from the ground then went. Zak told them that there would be worse situations through which they would have to go. They crossed the long woods and reached the start of grassland. Ahead was dense forest where they had to reach to spend the night. They waited till night then crossed grassland one by one as fast as they could. After reaching the dense forest, they climbed trees and sat on the branches then ate food. Cam told them that Zak will watch first then she will and after that Robert will watch then they slept.

Chapter  18

Everyone in the cavern was unhappy because Zak, Cam, Nate and Robert left them on their own to survive. They all wanted to know that how much they would take to return back. Lorn explained that the journey is very long so they would take 7 to 8 months to return back. With the help of log Lorn drew a line from the brazier to the entrance of cavern to explain the long distance Zak, Cam, Robert and Nate would be traveling. Bando put 4 pebbles imagining that they were Zak, Cam, Nate and Robert. They thought that they would move those stones every day. Lorn thought that it was silly but then she realized that it was like a game the way Zak made them play.

Chapter  19

After starting the journey, after some days Robert started to get discouraged. After few moments they started to feel vibrations in the ground. They've spot a monstrous figure. Robert sense something is wrong.

Chapter  20

While traveling, Robert was annoyed but he kept walking instantly. Robert noticed a strange thing like a tower but he climbed it. Cam stopped Robert to climb the tower as because of that he will be not covered to the birds. After a while they faced a creature like a weasel. They all faced the monster and fought with it bravely. Robert made it run away. To celebrate their victory Cam found food. The name of monster was Night bird. Robert postponed his midday rest.

Chapter 21

Robert was tired and sick as well and that’s why he was vomiting. Robert fell asleep so Nate gave him his bat fur They all were supposed to cross the stream but Cam and Zak had already crossed it .They saw a strange figure .They fought it and Nate was eaten by the monster and sadly Nate is dead. Nate’s real name is Steven and he is been missed by Robert, Cam and Zak . Cam described her as the best hunter and Robert said “he helped him while he was sick.”

Chapter  22

The weather is quite cold in the morning. Bando was having illusions. Lorn had rearranged the stones, suddenly Bando woke up and he was very angry. Out of 4 stones he has thrown 1 stone and only 3 stones are left that means out of Robert, Cam , Zak and Nate 1 has to be in trouble .Lorn was then sleeping near the tunnel but her leg was numb.

Chapter  23

Robert felt cod and he could hear vibration’s in the ground. They’re very near to end their journey. When they came near so they got into a new trouble that is to cross the road. Cam is really excited but Robert is confused that why is Cam very excited. Robert learnt many new things through the adventure. They're risking their lives to cross the road.
